The Startup Product Diagnostic (Ebook): How to Diagnose Product Divergence in a Startup
Ebook edition, EPUB and PDF both included. Nothing ships: one ZIP download with both files appears on your order page and in your email the moment you pay. Prefer print? The pocket paperback is $14.99.
A startup can be running three products inside one seed round without anyone deciding to build a second one. It begins as a configuration for a large customer. A second buyer then arrives with a different budget, a pricing model gets written to fit one deal, and the company is paying for two go-to-market motions on a round sized for one.
The Startup Product Diagnostic measures the split before an investor measures it for you.
The seven commitments
The diagnostic defines a product structure as seven commitments a company makes about one offer: primary user, economic buyer, purchase trigger, workflow changed, value metric, price and contract, and acquisition motion. Count the commitments that answer to a different customer and you have the divergence count.
- Zero to two: one product with configurations
- Three or four: a decision waiting to be made
- Five or more: two companies sharing a repository, and the playbook changes
The playbooks
The playbooks cover the value metric and how it governs price, the economics of a second go-to-market motion, services revenue booked as product revenue and what it costs at the multiple, how an AI model moves margin and buyer, reading traction from a customer list, the price of unwinding, and the gate a second product has to clear.
One enterprise buyer in one industry, sold by the founder, costs about $18,500 a month, rising to $27,200 once the buyer is an enterprise, against a seed commercial budget near $31,000. The unwind ratio prices the correction: under 0.15 it is routine, and over 0.40 the round cannot fund the correction and growth at the same time.
